Stone Island Junior

Stone Island owner Carlo Rivetti joined garment company GFT in 1975 with a desire to break with tradition and create a new sportswear line for the company.  In the early 80s, he discovered Massimo Osti’s C.P. Company, a sportswear brand that was both innovative and cutting edge.  Massimo Osti was both head designer and art director for C.P. Company and had been working on a diffusion line, which really interested Carlo Rivetti.  Osti had started working with a special fabric, Tela Stella, which was used to make truck tarpaulins and because it didn’t really fit the CP Company brief, he decided to use it to make a special collection of seven jackets under the name ‘Stone Island’.  The collection had a strong reference to military style, complete with the now iconic compass badge inspired by military insignia and Osti’s love of the sea. Rivetti saw Osti as a revolutionary, a man ahead of his time with a core belief in informal wear; an ethos he wanted to continue when he took full control of the company in the 90s.  Rivetti needed a designer that encompassed all of Osti’s beliefs; he found that in English designer and Central Saint Martins graduate Paul Harvey, who had come into fashion reluctantly when he had moved to Italy with his wife.  Harvey designed 24 collections for Stone Island; these were based on fabric evolution and extensive research and were functional and wearable, which helped to set the brand apart from its competitors.  After Harvey left in 2008, Rivetti opted for a full design team of well-travelled individuals from different backgrounds and cultures, allowing Stone Island to remain fully contemporary and to speak to customers globally.  Today, Stone Island is one of the world’s leading sportswear brands.
